Understanding caregivers’ experiences and perspectives is crucial if we aim to enhance their capacity for supporting their child’s development through early intervention. That’s why we’ve hosted parents on Coach2Coach before & why they are include as experts – because (as we always say), caregivers ARE the experts on their child.
Below I’m sharing several key insights that parents in EI have directly shared with us over the last 5 years:
- Mothers emphasized the significance of trust-building and effective communication in supporting her son’s development. She shared that it took her a long time to learn specific strategies and she was grateful the providers continued to be patient with her and didn’t rush the process.
- A parent shared that the education from providers was helpful, but many times they couldn’t digest it all the first time. They appreciated multiple opportunities to hear things in different ways, repeatedly over time.
- Fathers noted that he liked watching videos of other parents doing something similar (from our Coach2Coach Parent Practice Library). He said it was easier to imagine how it would look and feel when he tried something new with his own child.
- Two parents emphasized that they appreciated providers who showed up consistently with a warm smile and listening ear. They noted that their child was medically fragile and may not ever reach certain developmental milestones. It was important for them to know that professionals were there to support them and celebrate tiny victories, like a week without illnesses.
- Many caregivers echoed the recognition of early intervention specialists as sources of support for the entire family, understanding the challenges families face when they are navigating parenthood and early intervention simultaneously.
The insights shared by caregivers highlight the collaborative, supportive nature of early intervention. By acknowledging the pivotal role caregivers play and providing them with necessary tools and support, we are truly able to foster positive outcomes for both children and caregivers alike.
